Today Juan Wauters has released the newest single from his upcoming album Wandering Rebel, and I am featured on it, and in the music video! I’ve been a fan of Juan’s for over a decade. I love The Beets and Juan’s solo releases. Everything Juan makes inspires me, and I’ve been so lucky to have seen him perform over the years and have his music as a continuous part of my life.
It’s hard to put into words how it felt to step into our friend Carlos’ studio with Juan and get to actually sing together. I was shaking with nervous excitement. I’ve known Juan for a long time and even spent some time together, but I wasn’t prepared for how magical it would feel to have our voices intertwine in the same room! The evening was fun and full of ease and joy.
Now that the song is coming out, I got to be part of the music video. Matthew Volz has done art and videos that I’ve been a fan of since I was a teenager too. The first times I saw Juan Wauters play I remember seeing Matthew setting up the stage with hand-painted banners and candles, creating environments that brought out the magic of the performance. My video-making style has been highly influenced by Matthew Volz’ work for the past decade, and I feel eternally grateful and in awe of Matthew and Juan’s work. So I was really psyched when I learned Matthew was going to be working on the music video for Modus Operandi.
It was directed by the lovely Fatos Marishta, who I met the day of the shoot. The crew that day was just Fatos, Matthew, and Fatos’ best friend Eric McLelan. It was such a good vibe, it really felt like the perfect mindset and team for art-making. Just wandering in NYC and seeing where we found ourselves, and letting the video kind of unfold itself to them. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience from beginning to end.
In conclusion, MEET YOUR HEROES!!
Here’s the Modus Operandi music video, enjoy!
